Team History
A rookie team, the TeraViks were started by one of our members who participated on a rival school’s team last year and wanted to “bring a team to his home school”. A pre-season t-shirt launcher project helped us to get organized and recognized!
Team Goals
In our rookie year, build a “brand” for the team gaining recognition throughout our school and community, all the while getting organized, developing our teaming skills, recruiting, and building a competitive robot for the Portland regional event.
Team’s FIRST Impact
We’re seeing how to connect what we have learned in the classroom with practical hands-on experience. The idea of “gracious professionalism” is something we practice even within the team as we work together. We are now “hooked” on sharing FIRST!
Community Description
Listed as one of the best places to live, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is a beautiful rural community just 30 miles outside the city of Spokane. It’ biggest asset is the people, and our team has been lucky to have dedicated mentors in our rookie year.
Team Strengths
Maniacal organization and unyielding passion! The TeraViks’ rookie team includes Freshman through Seniors ensuring we will continue as a strong team for years to come. Amazing mentors and great sponsors round us out.
Most Significant Challenge Overcome
Maniacal organization was our ultimate goal but we struggled with that at first; however, we worked out the kinks with a pre-season project and by the time we hit the FIRST competition, we were a well oiled machine.
Robot and Game Strategy
We spent the first week of our 6 week build period studying the game, and identified being quick and nimble as the best attributes to be competitive. Each person on the team has had a chance to drive the bot and can be a sub driver if needed.
Most Competitive for Which Awards
Being a rookie team, it is only natural we have our sights focused on the Rookie All-Star Award. The team has worked hard to get organized and focused as quickly as possible, all the while evangelizing out efforts within the school and community.
Funding Sources
The TeraViks applied for and were awarded the NASA rookie grant, which gave the team a huge boost. Another major contributor is the North Idaho Discovery Association, who contributed to many start-up costs such as t-shirts, tools, and travel.
Public Awareness
We have been featured in many school newspaper articles, as well as in the two local major publications (CDA Press and Spokane Review). On 2/20/10, the team was on KHQ -The Morning Show in Spokane. Time Warner Cable featured our t-shirt launcher to 30K people on a basketball broadcast.
